Brownie is gone

Brownie is gone.

Our roughly seven year old half breed Labrador succumbed to an unknown ailment which greatly weakened him for more than a week now.

My family believes one of our household help may have carelessly included some bony or sharp object in Brownie’s food that may have caused his persistent coughing and deteriorating health from that time on.

I remember seeing Brownie sometime last Friday night calling out his name. He was obviously sick, not even wagging his tail, far from the robust canine we all knew and loved.

One of our helpers said that Brownie went out of our house when Junior, Sonny and I went out to Cubao on the afternoon of the 28th. A neighbor later told me that Brownie had somehow strayed to one of the apartment rows in Daffodils St. that Saturday night, too weak to come back home. Residents put Brownie back in the street itself where he was last seen lying and presumed dead.

Sunday morning after hearing what happened to Brownie, I instructed the helpers to bring back Brownie’s remains to be later buried in a nearby vacant lot.

However, that was not meant to be. According to neighbors, some people or someone in a public utility tricycle took Brownie with them. I could only surmise that they were unscrupulous heartless dog-eaters who lived nearby. For their shameless cruelty to animals, may God have mercy on their souls.

I almost always wished there was some sort of dog heaven for all the good pets out there, especially the good ones I’ve had in the past like Brownie. I just realized that some of the saddest moments of my childhood years and adolescent life were the deaths of my pet animals.

I regret not having enough money to have called in a veterinarian sooner. In fact, I had already placed the vet’s calling card above our fridge in preparation for an imminent call. I just deferred calling until I had the necessary resources. But Brownie was just so sick. Had I called earlier maybe things would have been different.

My wife had given Brownie’s perfect epitaph --- “He has served us well.”

With Brownie, I’m not surprised why a dog is called man’s best friend.

Rest well our loyal canine friend…rest well.

Couples for Christ turns 26!

The number 26 has always been special for me.

I was born on September 26.

My wife was born on October 26.

We were married on January 26.

Our second child was born on December 26. (Our eldest almost was born on a 26 – Feb. 25; the third also on a (Sept.) 25 and our youngest on a (March) 12.

I recently even became a godfather to two Couples for Christ (CFC) couples during a mass wedding ceremony last May 26.

This year, the CFC itself has turned 26!

Last June 24, the community celebrated its 26th anniversary at the Quirino Grandstand grounds in Luneta Park, City of Manila.

Many leaders and members from my unit were present that special day in Manila. Unfortunately, my wife Odette wasn’t able to join us due to her disminorhea. Junior and Sonny Boy opted to just stay behind and look after their mother. With me, came along Joshua, Baby Faith and their two nannies. We got a ride with the del Castillo couple in their Mitsubishi Pajero vehicle with some of their household members from Sitio Ruby.

We arrived at the park grounds by around 10:00 am. We then proceeded to the area near the statue of St. Lorenzo Ruiz which I told unit members to be our rendezvous point by around that time. We weren’t able to see anyone new after 30 minutes though we received information several members from Sitio Ruby were already there having arrived earlier this morning. I bought an anniversary shirt which I changed to before the group moved and settled to a shady corner near the road in front of the nearby Manila Hotel.

Unlike last year, this anniversary at the Quirino grounds was met with good hot weather. Last year, I was wet due to the continuous rains that even got stronger in the afternoon. This year I was still wet but this time because perspiration due to the sun’s extreme heat.

I really loved this picture of Faith and Joshua so close together on the CFC’s Anniversary Day!

Through thick and thin, we in COUPLES FOR CHRIST community remain faithful to the mission God has set out for us --- bringing glad tidings to the poor and renewing the face of the earth!

GK friends celebrate birthdays at Sitio Ruby

My wife and son Joshua (sitting in front)
wait for our guests’ arrival

In the movie “Field of Dreams”, it was said that “if you build it, they will come”. In the case of Gawad Kalinga site Sitio Ruby it may be said that if we start doing GK work in this area, they will come, and help build it.

What’s to build? Well, simply not houses. GK helps in building homes, building communities, building a nation and (re)building impoverished lives with dignity and respect.

That’s why it’s always a joy when people from all walks of life offer their time talent and treasures for the GK cause in Sitio Ruby. People that include well known celebrities like broadcasters Tin-tin Bersola and husband Julius Babao, Dr. Vicky Belo and Cheryl Cosim. They have all heard the call for nation building through GK and have come to Sitio Ruby to help build the GK vision and make it a reality.

Last June 17, another set of TV personalities led by Richard Quan decided to share their blessings particularly with the children of Sitio Ruby. Richard who celebrated his birthday that day was looking for an area like Sitio Ruby and found it.

Recently, Julius like his wife Tin-tin, decided to spend their hard earned money for his birthday this year, not on an extravagant party but rather on the construction of a GK house in Sitio Ruby. Moreover, the couple visited the GK site last July 8 to hold an advanced celebration of his birthday with the people of Ruby.

I’m confident that as the days go by, more and more people will come to know of GK and help in its realization among other things, of building 700,000 houses in 7,000 communities in 7 years.

By God’s grace, they will continue to come and help build the GK dream!
